Began in 1987, the HUD Tenants’ Coalition of Newark, a founding member of the National Alliance of Housing and Urban Development Tenants, grew from 8 to 25 member buildings, housing an estimated 25,000 residents, and continues to work with tenant leaders from privately-owned HUD-assisted apartment complexes in Newark and the surrounding area.
Our Mission
The Greater Newark HUD Tenants Coalition (GNHTC) organizes residents in government-assisted and public housing, supports tenant groups, develops leaders, and advocates for health and safety improvements, fostering dignity and a safer community for residents.
Our Success
Brought housing issues into the mainstream through media work, such as the Asbury Park Press series entitled “Renter Hell”, which led to proposed legislation at the state level addressing landlord-tenant issues.
Successfully pressured slum landlords in Newark to make improvements to their properties or got them to sell their properties to someone who will, such as at the Fox Properties and at Garden Spires.
Supported existing and activated new tenant associations in every Newark ward while providing on-going leadership development of tenants through one-on-one and group coaching and tenant conferences.
